Teddy Bear Picnic
& Parade
Children ages 3-6 are invited to bring their favorite stuffed bear and a lunch for a fun time on the Cheney Mansion grounds. Juice boxes & cookies will be provided for the children, and we’ll have lemonade for adults. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Held inside if raining. Must register to attend.

Circus, Circus! Family Art Afternoon at Cheney Mansion Gardens
Artist Margot McMahon brings her teachings from Yale University and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago to an afternoon of creativity at the mansion. Create sculpture from recycled cubes, cones, spheres and rectangular boxes. Using these recycled and reused everyday materials, construct whimsical and wonderful creatures resembling both the known and the fantastic. Some recyclables will be provided. Bring your own favorite found objects - start saving them now! After registering, you will be sent a list of suggested objects.
Ages 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Garden Hat Party at Cheney Mansion
Children, ages 5 to 10 (along with one parent), are invited to a fun patio party at the mansion. Bring a hat to decorate, or choose one from our selection. Flowers and other decorations will be provided. Then don your newly embellished creation, and enjoy cupcakes and “tea”. Yes, bring your cameras! Held inside if raining.

JUST FOR KIDS PROGRAMS
Composting for Kids (Ages 5-10)
Learn what goes on in a backyard compost pile, and why compsoting is good for the garden and good for the earth. There will be bugs and worms to see. Kids are encouraged to bring a paper bag of kitchen vegetable scraps (banana peels, carrot peels, egg shells, etc) to add to Cheney Mansion's compost pole.

A Boot-iful Shoe Garden (Ages 6-9)
Recycle those outgrown and old boots and gym shoes by turning them into a stylish flower pot. In fact, this could be the first step in creating a whole garden of old shoes—such as Dad’s worn-out boots or Mom’s old dress shoes. (Be sure to ask first!) Bring your favorite old shoe (old socks are optional). Plants, planting instructions and materials will be provided.

Dancing Cans (Ages 8-10)
Cheney Mansion has a box of cans in need of recycling. Come make a dancing tin can man to decorate your backyard. You can dangle him from a string and make him dance off your deck. All materials are supplied—just come have fun making this earth-friendly project.

Enchanted Container Garden (Ages 7-10)
Create your own small container garden! Weave a tiny fence, then add moss, small plants, stones, shells, and your imagination to make an enchanted garden. All materials provided, but you may bring small items from home to personalize your creation.

Planting and Painting (Ages 12)
First comes the planting. The class begins by creating a garden of wonderful textures and vibrant colors. Then all students receive personal attention as they paint scenes from the Mansion’s grounds in watercolor and acrylic. On the last day, August 11, the students’ own garden is used as subject matter for their final paintings. The instructor has 10 years experience teaching high school art classes, a BFA from Michigan State, and Masters from the School of the Art Institute.

KIDS Cook! (Ages 8-12)
Held in the mansion’s catering kitchen, this series is
taught by professional chef Ron Martin on Saturday
mornings. A combination of hands-on and demonstration,
these fun classes train young chefs in the
basic techniques of various cooking methods and

Composting for the Impatient
Gardener
Taking the mystery out of backyard composting, Cheney Mansion’s head gardener shows how composting is easier than you ever thought. Learn the few simple steps to making compost and using it to improve your garden’s soil. We’ll also show how to put together a “worm composting” bin to compost kitchen scraps year round.

Natural Branch Trellis
Learn to make a rustic trellis for your garden out of tree branches. You may have seen these offered during past Plant Sales at the mansion. Materials and tools provided, but participants may bring their own cordless drill and hammer.
